Who is Johny Todd?

Johny Todd is a multi-disciplinary British artist, designer and maker whose creative practice spans Fine-Art installations, fine-metalwork and design-craft, often at the intersection of traditional craft techniques and contemporary aesthetic frameworks that emphasise materiality, process, and meticulous craftsmanship.

How long has Johny Todd been a professional practicing artist?

Active professionally since 1992, he has undertaken numerous commissions and exhibitions. He has degrees a in Fine Art Painting (BA Hons, 1st Class), plus a post-graduate MA in Silversmithing, Jewellery and Related Products from the renowned Birmingham School of Jewellery (UCE), UK.

He works predominently with leather, metal and wood.

Other creative projects and output?

He is a member of the The (Britsh) Guild of Master Craftsmen and in addition to his individual practice, Johny collaborates with Debbie Todd within the creative vehicle ProteanArt (est. 2009).

In 2019, Johny (in collaboration with ProteanArt) established WY STUDIOS in Woodings Yard, Stafford, U.K. - a vibrant, independent community of artists, designers, and makers. This includes a unique physical shop, that can be visited, where our artwork, handcrafted leather goods, unique handmade watches, art materials and art kits can be purchased or commissioned, This shop also showcases selected curated products from local and international artisans, plus art supplies and books.

With a solid background in Fine Art Painting and a breadth of superlative practical making skills, Johny Todd is also an expert in picture framing (since 1994): which includes most traditional picture framing solutions, contemporary picture framing techneques, mounting artwork, stretching and mounting canvases, and finding solutions to house 3 dimensional hard-to-display collectables and heritage items within cases or box frames. Renowned in Staffordshire as one of the best picture framers currently available in the region, his skill and workshop’s reputation far outstrips all other picture framing services in Stafford and the surrounding area.

Johny Todd’s creative output and products are available to buy directly on the website, where a selection of the most popular products can be ordered: most items are customised to individual colour specifications, with personalisation added, with some basic ‘stock’ versions available too.

Can i commission Johny Todd’s work?

Large scale artwork pieces are always made to commission following a consultation. Specific small scale commissions are frequently undertaken of product designs, such as bags, watches etc. - mainly in leather; metal; and mixed media.

Can i speak to Johny Todd or visit his studio and workshop?

The main studio is based at Woodings Yard, Bailey Street, Stafford ST17 4BG

The shop area is usually open Wednesday & Thursday 10:30-17:00 (GMT) and Friday & Saturday 10:30-15:00 (GMT) - times and days may alter depending on the current projects. specific appointment times are available if one is travelling to location.

A limited number of workshop sessions are available per year - booked via the website, or enquiries can be made for longer or extended sessions via email too. Most participatory creative sessions are to make versions of our products* in leather, experiencing the making/craft processes we employ.
